Ad Spend vs. Management Fees: What You're Actually Paying For

Oct 5, 2026

When a business hires an agency to run Google or Meta ads, the bill has two separate parts: the money that goes to the platform to show your ads, and the fee the agency charges to run them. Understanding the difference makes quotes much easier to compare.

Ad spend goes to the platform

Ad spend is what Google, Meta or TikTok charge to show your ads. It should be paid on your own card, in an ad account that belongs to your business. In the Valley, small local accounts commonly spend somewhere between $500 and a few thousand dollars a month, and larger campaigns go well past $10,000.

Owning the ad account matters more than it sounds. It holds your campaign history, audiences, and conversion data, which is everything the platform has learned about who buys from you. If an agency runs ads from its own account, that history leaves when they do.

The management fee pays for the work

The management fee covers strategy, writing and designing the ads, setting up targeting and tracking, testing what works, and reporting on it. One Scottsdale agency publishes Google Ads management at $500 to $1,000 a month for accounts spending $500 to $10,000, and larger accounts in the Phoenix area commonly pay $1,000 to $2,500 a month to manage.

Some agencies also charge an onboarding fee for the initial build, audit, and tracking setup. One published Scottsdale example is $3,000 up front before monthly management begins. Others waive setup in exchange for a longer commitment.

Percentage-of-spend pricing

Some agencies charge a percentage of your ad spend instead of a flat fee. It's simple, but it means the agency earns more when you spend more, whether or not the extra spend is working. A flat fee tied to a defined scope keeps the incentives cleaner, and it's easier to budget for.

Whichever model you're quoted, ask for the two numbers separately, confirm the ad account is in your name, and make sure the reporting shows what the spend actually returned in leads or sales.
